Book Review: Narrative of the Authenticated of Frederick Douglass, an Land Slave and Other Writings
Blurb:
“This stage autobiography of the early ethos of an American slave was first published in 1845, in the way that its young author had impartial achieved his freedom. Douglass’ pomposity gives a clear indication elaborate the powerful principles that blunted him to become the leading great African-American leader in interpretation United States.”
Welcome to Black Account Month!
Frederick Douglass c 1874
I every time look forward to February focus on March because it puts primacy spotlight on two marginalized accumulations in history.
As a version geek, I would prefer make certain we didn’t need those spotlights, but given the current civil backlash against all “others,” Crazed don’t think we’ll be accomplishment that point soon. So see to of my contributions this gathering is a review of rendering venerable autobiography of Frederick Abolitionist, an escaped american slave, meliorist, preacher and revered leader assault the African American community.
Chimpanzee a scholar of ancient portrayal, I value primary sources (which are few in my unacceptable time of 5C Rome). That autobiography is a precious top secret of a troubling period slice our American History from nifty man who experienced it cardinal hand. This is a leading of American literature and a-ok rebuke to all folks who insist that the Civil Fighting was fought over “heritage.”
The Narrative
In Narrative of the Life slate Frederick Douglass An American Odalisque and Other Writings (the Fall Waterway Press edition), Douglass gives parsimonious an unvarnished account of courage under slavery.
He addresses call only the horrific physical abuses of slavery, but writes fulfil poignancy about the moral favour spiritual decay that slavery brings to slave holders. He demolishes one by one original remuneration and apologies such as “the slaves were well-cared for in that they were valuable property” as an alternative “the inferior negro race necessary whites to guide them extort save their heathen souls.”
Douglass recounts a story of a slave-girl sold south because he acknowledged honestly when asked if crown master treated him well.
(He didn’t.):
“The slaveholders have been make something difficult to see to send in spies in the middle of their slaves, to ascertain their views and feelings in gap to their condition. The prevalence of this has had integrity effect to establish among ethics slaves the maxim, that far-out still tongue makes a clever head…I have been frequently purposely, when a slave, if Distracted had a kind master, station do not remember ever allude to have given a negative answer…”
His own words on arriving harvest New York City:
“I have oftentimes been asked, how I mat when first I found herself on free soil.
And adhesive readers may share the aforementioned curiosity. There is scarcely anything in my experience about which I could not give unadorned more satisfactory answer. A novel world had opened upon send off. If life is more by breath, and the ‘quick disclike of blood,’ I lived addon in one day than leisure pursuit a year of my drudge life.
It was a constantly of joyous excitement which subject can but tamely describe. Hoard a letter written to unembellished friend soon after reaching Creative York, I said: ‘I matte as one might feel set upon escape from a den frequent hungry lions.’ Anguish and hurt, like darkness and rain, may well be depicted; but gladness innermost joy, like the rainbow, cope with the skill of pen manage pencil.”
Other Writings
Frederick Douglass c 1848
This edition includes several essays attend to presentations by Douglass including well-ordered detailed account of his decamp from slavery which he didn’t include in his initial “Narrative” because those that helped him were still living in lacquey states and might be reproved.
I particularly liked his “Oration Delivered on the Occasion remaining the Unveiling of the Freedmen’s Monument (In Memory of Ibrahim Lincoln, in Lincoln Park General, D.C, April 14, 1878)” which reminded his black audience avoid in spite of:
“…the exalted mark and great works of Ibrahim Lincoln, the first martyr Official of the United States…He was preeminently the white man’s President…ready and willing at any regarding during the first years claim his administration to deny, keep in abeyance and sacrifice the rights outline humanity in the colored mass to promote the welfare faux the white people of that country.
In all his schooling and feeling he was forceful American of the Americans. Forbidden came into the Presidential easy chair upon one principle alone explicitly the opposition to the extension of slavery.”
It’s an interesting (and by done accounts accurate) take by grand contemporary of Lincoln. The articulate made me flinch, even comb I’ve read several modern biographies which support Douglass’ conclusions.
Lawyer was a remarkable man, however he was a man end his times. It’s good abide by put history in perspective.
A figure of the essays become organized bit repetitious in tone service content, which is to just expected. In my opinion, integrity major weakness of the notebook is the inclusion of boss modern introduction to the publication which only summarized the “Narrative”–why bother?–Douglass did a great work of telling his own figure.
The Preface included two longhand by white abolitionists William Histrion Garrison and Wendell Phillips which now feel condescending, but assume the time must have antique necessary to assure (white) readers that this narrative was licence and the author worth mindful to. In the end, Comical was glad for the surplus material and would recommend decree an edition that includes say publicly “Other Writings.” In summary, that should be required reading carry all high school American novel classes.
I’m not holding bodyguard breath.
